Welcome to
Pre-Kindergarten / Kindergarten

As Happy Day friends get ready for their next academic adventure, our Pre-Kindergarten / Kindergarten (Pre-K/K) classroom focuses on providing opportunities for children to show independence and confidence. We want to provide them with the skills to work alongside others and become lifelong learners.

What to expect in Pre-K/K

With kindergarten on the horizon, our Pre-K/K teachers aim to strengthen and reinforce self-sufficiency in the school setting and give each child proper opportunities to display their independence. Pre-K/K friends take a big step at Happy Day: they walk from the front door to the classroom without a teacher’s assistance and unpack their backpacks all by themselves. Then, at the end of the day, they’re responsible for organizing all their belongings and being ready to go when pickup time comes. To help Pre-K/K friends build compassion and leadership skills, we also pair them with P1 buddies for different projects throughout the year. At graduation, we want our Pre-K/K children to confidently say: “I’m ready for kindergarten!”

Philosophy & Curriculum

Our advanced accredited Pre-K/K program continues to support social and emotional growth while guiding children to learn new and more challenging concepts. We supplement our monthly curriculum units with the Heggerty Language Arts Program, which focuses on phonemic awareness; word blending, building, and decoding; shared reading to promote comprehension, vocabulary development, and fluency; and writing to express ideas through words and pictures. Children regularly participate in circle time and read aloud activities, look at books independently, and occasionally engage in small group guided reading. Our goal: an environment full of books and endless opportunities to read, write, share, and listen.

Our Pre-K/K friends love the superheroes unit, which includes the following activities:

Literacy: Reading “Ladybug Girl” and creating our own superhero identity.

Math: Solving simple math problems using manipulatives and writing numbers.

Art: Defining a logo and drawing one for our superhero identity.

Social/Emotional: Who are everyday superheroes in our community?

"Choosing the right daycare for your children is a big decision, and CHDS has exceeded all of our expectations. The administrators and teachers made the transition incredibly easy. They are not only kind and attentive to each child, but they truly make an effort to get to know everyone as individuals. Our kids come home happy, nurtured, and excited to go back the next day. We have seen incredible growth in their confidence and curiosity because of the engaging curriculum and structured environment that CHDS provides. We are so grateful to be a part of the CHDS community!"

``My favorite moment in the classroom is when a child hears a story and something shifts. The classroom falls away and the door opens to another world — a world filled with laughter, magic and wonder. In an instant they fall in love with a book, with the characters in the story, and hopefully with the joy of reading.”
